Lakes

The Lake Group at the Danish Institute of Fisheries Research was established in 1988. At present, the staff includes three scientists and a varying number of technicians and student workers. Several M.Sc. and Ph.D. students have been involved with the group during the last years along with guest scientists.

Research topics

  • Interactions of fish in freshwater lake ecosystems, predator/prey interactions and their effects on lower trophic levels and the lake environment.
  • Brackish lakes: effects of the biological structure on lake environment and implications for lake restoration.
  • Biomanipulation. The effect of reducing planktivores and effects of stocking with piscivores.
  • Stocking with 0+ pike – effects on the ecosystem. Methods of stockings. Pike 0+ behaviour. Otolith analysis.
  • Re-established lakes: development of fish populations and effects on lake environment as well as lake fisheries.
  • Long-term effects of nutrient load reduction and biomanipulation on fish populations in natural lakes.
  • Monitoring fish in lakes: radiotelemetry, standard fish survey programs, point abundance sampling by electrofishing (PASE).
  • Development of experimental designs.
